To properly treat many vein issues, we must first have an accurate diagnosis so that we can get to the root of the problem. After your initial consultation and physical examination with one of our highly-credentialed vascular specialists, we will use diagnostic tools to determine the extent of your vein problems.
This advanced testing will be performed at our onsite Vascular Specialty Laboratory – one of the first accredited vascular laboratories in the country. Experienced and certified vascular technologists, using state-of-the-art equipment, perform all testing.
Duplex color ultrasound reveals vein issues
One of our principal diagnostic tools for vein issues is advanced duplex color ultrasound imaging. This test allows us to obtain pictures of deep veins that would otherwise be impossible to see. While the test is sophisticated in the information it can provide us, it is simple and painless for the patient. The test requires no preparation on your part, and it takes an hour or less to perform.
You may be familiar with ultrasound technology, which is a noninvasive diagnostic tool that uses high frequency sound waves to produce an image on a screen. The test is used in many medical diagnoses. Duplex color ultrasound is a more advanced form of ultrasound technology. It combines:
- conventional imaging information to show the structure of your blood vessels, and
- information on blood flow through your veins.
Duplex color ultrasound produces color-coded images to show our surgeons where your blood flow is severely blocked or where vein valves don’t close properly. If valves do not close completely, they are considered incompetent. This finding is important to your doctor when planning treatment.
Most insurance companies typically cover some or most of the cost of duplex color ultrasounds if medically necessary. We will work with you to determine your health insurance coverage for this testing.
