Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation, also known as VNUS Closure, is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure to treat varicose veins at their source. Usually, the procedure takes about an hour. Compared to vein stripping, RF ablation requires only local anesthesia, and patients have a minimal recovery time following treatment. The risk of complications is minimal.
RF ablation is often used for patients with a condition known as superficial venous reflux, which often results in varicose veins and other painful symptoms.
What’s involved in RF ablation (VNUS Closure)?
Your Total Vein Care doctor will start by numbing the areas of the veins to be treated. Then, he will insert a small catheter gently into the vein and apply radiofrequency energy to close the vein. The closed vein will leave a thin scar that your body will absorb. Finally, blood will be automatically rerouted to healthy veins.
What can I expect during recovery from RF ablation (VNUS Closure)?
After the treatment, your doctor will cover the area with a compression bandage that you will need to leave on for two days. You’ll continue to be monitored for an hour or two after the procedure. You can then start walking again. You can resume work and normal activities the next day. You’ll need to wear compression hose for about two weeks.
What are the results from RF ablation?
Most patients report varicose-vein symptom relief soon after treatment. To get a better idea of the results you can expect from RF ablation, check out the Results section to see before-and-after photos.
