For small to medium varicose veins and spider veins, we may recommend using sclerotherapy – a highly effective, minimally invasive treatment.
What’s involved in sclerotherapy treatment?
The quick, in-office treatment involves injecting a special medication solution into unwanted veins using a very fine needle. The solution causes the veins to shrink, close off and gradually disappear. A typical session takes just 20 to 30 minutes.
What can I expect during recovery from sclerotherapy?
You’ll need to wear prescribed compression hose continuously for two days following treatment and then during the day for the next two to three weeks. This will help to keep the veins from refilling and improve your results. You’ll be encouraged to immediately get back to normal activity and mild exercise, such as walking. However, you may want to avoid certain activities – such as heavy lifting, high-impact exercise, and lengthy squatting – for a few days. We recommend wearing stockings after healing for long trips, prolonged standing or when legs ache.
What are the results from sclerotherapy?
Typically, the body absorbs the treated veins within a few weeks. Depending on the number and type of problem veins, multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the best results. We can determine how many sessions you will need after your initial consultation and evaluation. We schedule the additional appointments about a month apart. Veins may appear in the same or nearby areas because treatment does not correct the underlying causes of spider veins that are usually driven by hormonal or genetic influence.
